Nach der Teilung Deutschlands 1949 wurde Westdeutschland zum offiziellen Nachfolgeteam Deutschlands erklärt.
Ostdeutschland wurde erst 1952 als FIFA-Mitglied aufgenommen und nahm 1958 zum ersten Mal am Qualifikationsturnier teil, wurde jedoch in seiner Qualifikationsgruppe hinter der Tschechoslowakei und Wales Letzter.
Sie standen 1974 einmal im Finale der FIFA-Weltmeisterschaft . Während des Turniers spielten sie zum ersten und einzigen Mal auf Seniorenebene gegen Westdeutschland , das in diesem Jahr Gastgeber war, und gewannen 1: 0.
Ostdeutschland wurde 1990 mit Westdeutschland wiedervereinigt und trat nach der Weltmeisterschaft 1990 nicht mehr an.
